4. INDICATE BRIEFLY THE PRESENT CONDITION OF THE EXHIBITION SERIES AND THE STUDY SERIES, IN YOUR DEPARTMENT.
[[/preprinted]]

The exhibition series consists as it did last year of five cases of casts of fishes exhibited in the Fish Hall, and a large number of casts on top of Coral cases, besides two cases of alcoholic specimens preserved in rectangular jars.

The study series has been improved by the accession of new and well preserved material, including[[strikethrough]]ed [[/strikethrough]] a number of types of new species and rare forms.

Light enters largely into the deterioration of specimens, and this is especially noticeable in the Fish Hall.

The number of specimens of fishes in the Museum collections is about the same as last year, the number of receipts being about equal to the number distributed. The estimate of 125,000 as the whole number contained in the several series is probably much too low.
