Humor is divided into three classes - as I see it - and these  classes are represented by John and his school - who laugh at the evasive things - the humor of Edgar Lee Masters - I think really its laughing more to keep from crying than giving vent to laughter for laughter's sake.  It seems to be more inward amusement than anything else - "Jake on you Spoon river" etc ironical - it is.  They laugh at Chopenhaur and don't laugh at Stephen Leacock.  How quiet they are - it bothers me that they are quiet - I feel that they look right thru me - see my tho'ts - then laugh at them.  I always feel like John is laughing at me when he laughs and doesn't tell me why - He probably is - but lies about it - He lies very effectively and beautifully - one day he told me how he had killed a boy and thrown him into the river - He kept

saying "you don't believe that - do you?" and I'd say "Of course not" - "nevertheless its true" Nevertheless I don't care to believe it - finally -"I'm glad you don't because it isn't the truth."  Some times he [[strikethrough]] laughs [[/strikethrough]] ^[[smiles]] and I see his teeth and he seems to be laughing inwardly at me - - and he looks like he could kill me.  He might turn Oscar Wilde and do it some time.  The second kind of humor is Mr Sheehan's blustering - hearty - breathing of good fellowship and self conceit.  He says amusing things and laughs the loudest - I always smile at him.  Sometimes I believe the smile disconcerts him - he's so egocentric - but not much, he is too self centered.  He tells of his abode Hut Cannasa and its wonders - "Oh its glorious.  Last night I read Jane Austin - Delicious!  Smoked my pipe and had a rip-roaring fire.  Oh I wouldn't live in town for a million dollars.  I adore it."  How smug he sounds - and how smug he looks as he prances down the hall - "Oh, I love my pipe - but you see it doesn't effect my figure and he struts
