Know Your Neighbor
By Lillian Aldrich

Every morning along about 10:15 a.m., when dishes and the main chores of housework are done and you sit back in your favorite chair with a second cup of coffee, isn't it nice to welcome another neighbor?
Through this gay and informative neighbor who visits us daily through the medium of radio via WVET we enjoy meeting celebrities living or visiting in Rochester. Quite often we recognize someone we know. Guy Fraser Harrison, well-known conductor of the Rochester Civic Orchestra and guest conductor in the major music centers throughout the country, was a recent guest.
Rambling With Roberta over the airwaves we met Mrs. Norman Getzin of Valley Road, who writes under the Pseudonym of Amber Dean those hair raising mystery thrillers, Johnny Lorens of Hollywood, actor, and recorder of songs, and Tony Blunt of Winton Road, who so cleverly applies Pennsylvania Dutch Designs to nondescript kitchens thus creating a before-and- after picture verbally over the airwaves. Also the unusual interview with the one and only woman watch repairer in Rochester, and the only woman garage owner and automobile mechanic in the area.
These completely ad lib conversations transpire with a sparkling wit under the expert guidance of the star of the show. Roberta Speaking is not a sterotyped program. Its format is flexible, allowing freedom in spot-lighting events of people of special interest. When no interviews are presented Roberta includes homey philosophy, talks ranging from the sublime to the ridiculous. Presented conversationally and in a friendly manner, bearing such an intimate touch that shut-ins have written to say that "It is just like having someone here visiting."
Rambles with Roberta is a participation program - with no conflicting products! The commercials are presented informally and are woven into the program to form an integral part of the show.
When this writer made her Radio debut as "Guest Appearance Participation" with Roberta on a recent program, we reversed the procedure after the broadcast and discovered many unusual facts about this fabulous lady. The show is written, produced and presented by Blanche Stuart Scott, whose professional name is "Roberta", who is a member of one of Rochester's oldest families. Miss Scott is an internationally known figure, whose personal contact with celebrities across the country is invaluable to Rambles With Roberta.
Miss Scott was the first woman aviator in the United States, one of six women members and only woman trustee of the famous "Early Birds Club" - a woman whose portrait is included in the Smithsonian Institute Portrait Gallery of Pioneer Aviators as well as in the Gallery of Immortals of Aviation, which, when completed, will be shown in every large city in the country.
Miss Scott is also the first woman to make a trans-continental tour by automobile. These "firts" have made Miss Scott a public figure of renown, whose name carries not only weight but also glamor. In addition to these feats Miss Scott has a history of nine years of writing for R.K.O., Universal, Pathe, Educational Features, and the Warner Brothers in Hollywood. She has filled one year of contract writing for radio events, has several short stories published, has written, directed and played the lead in a three-time weekly evening serial in Los Angeles, has produced a program similar to Rambles With Roberta for two years on KFI in Los Angeles, and has arranged and produced innumerable fashion shows, including two successive years of fashion shows for the Shine Theatre Chain.
An experienced radio artist, Miss Scott has proven her versatility by counting many friends from the audiences of "Know Your Neighbor."
