36 Woman Pilots End Derby Lap At Airport Rite

Pair to Share Trophy For Virtual Tie In Time

The "Ninety-Nines" landed in Rochester yesterday, 36 strong.

Representing the famed organization of woman pilots, the ladies brought their planes to a stop at Rochester Airport to complete the second lap of the 20th annual Powder Puff Derby. The flight began at Cleveland at 8 a.m. yesterday and will end at Teterboro, N.J., this morning.

Scoring the best estimated time from Jamestown to Rochester were Miss Martha Walter of Dayton, Ohio, and Mrs. Glen Martin of Chicago, both piloting Cessna 140s. They skimmed over the runway only one minute apart, chalking up flight time of 1 hour, 13 minutes, and 1 hour, 12 minutes, respectively - a distinction so narrow that the judges deemed them tied for first place.

The two were awarded the Frank Gannett trophy, which each will hold for six months of the year. The cup was presented to them by Russell Holderman, chief pilot for the The Gannett Newspapers, at ceremonies witnessed by several thousand persons.

The local presentation was sponsored by The Gannett Newspapers, the Rochester Pilots Association, and Page Airways. Each pilot in the derby was presented with an orchid corsage by Page officials during the ceremonies. Box lunches were provided by the Pilots Association while the Gannett Company refueled the planes.

The feminine flyers received a royal greeting from Blanche Scott of Rochester, first woman flyer in the United States, and from Helen Clank of this city, a member of the 99s who was unable to enter the derby because of her plane's engine failure. Mrs. Dorothy Forkel, also a member of the society, was on hand to greet her sisters of the sky.

A total of eight trophies will have been awarded to the winners of the derby by the time the hop is finished today. The Albany Knickerbocker News, a member of The Gannett Newspapers group, will furnish a prize to the winner of the third lap from Rochester to Albany.

The 99s will be feted at a dinner tonight at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel, New York City, where more than 500 members of the society will be waiting to greet them at the conclusion of the derby run.
