It wasn't long before Draft Dodging become one of the favorite and fun pastimes of the whole crew of madsters who flew from Nassau Field. We had another form of Undertaker Cheating that we also classified loosely under the FUN IN THE AIR category. At that time, the Belmont Race Track was the home of THE society races. Anybody who really was anybody was a patron of the Belmont races. Horse racing in the flat was not only a big thing but steeplechasing in the infield was a big 'in' thing. The entrance fees for that time were exceedingly ;bigh...racing was considered a rich man's sport and they were determined to keep it that way. Just for kick the fliers would zoom over go over the hurdles and land in the small infiled between jumps. It was a very neat trick but they did it. The gate attendant would get apoplectic and come storming over demanding, "What'the Hell's the big idea. You trying to kill somebody. If you stupids want to get in this place the entrance gate is over there, go and get yourtickets like anyone else. Just put down your two and a half buck and try to imitate gentlemen.:

"How do you lubbers get that way? Got rocks instead of brains? You should be paying us. We've given you an exhibition that other people pay thousands of dollars to see. You've got it for free and you're trying to knock us off for two and a half measly bucks. Your mother wears infantry boots."

Pay to see flying on Long Island. The joint is lousy with planes. They may be great for youse guys. We run horses not planes so take off and don't come back like a nice fellow. Maybe you could drop in Long Island Sound? Thanks."

Naturally paying off was the fartherest thing from our minds.
