dissected every detail with a professional eye, then put a beautiful blonde wig on his head. She stood back to study the effect. She wasn't satisfied.

The appearance was good enough for Dick. He jumped up, rushed to the phone to call the newspapers to give them the planned story. After some study, Florence brought out a knitted cap, fitting it neatly over the wig.

"That's it,' she said, well pleased with the effect, "No one will suspect who you are now."

Next morning the Los Angeles papers broke out in big headlines the announcement of the debut of Lincoln Beachy's secret protege. They repeated the prediction she would fly rings around Blanche Scott. That day we had another overflow crowd.

When I got to the field everyone started ribbing me. All of them knew my quick temper so they kept at it until I obliged them with a few verbal skyrockets and candles, then went sulking over near the front of the grand stand. Every move exactly as planned. There I stood in a spot where identification would be immediate.

After a few races by the men, it was announced over the public address system that this was the moment they had waited for..... they were now to witness the first public flight of a new and sensational woman pilot. The plane bearing the beautiful blonde was trundled out ...I stood there immobile sullenly watching the take-off, then delibertly turned my back on the whole scene. The action was pure sucker-bait for the grandstand.

The masquerading Linc went through his usual paces, even taking the dive off the cliff. At this the crowd went mad while I stood and gave a good imitation of myself in a real full blown pout. He finally came in and landed. Then several of the officials came over to ask me if I'd care to meet 'her'. This I refused to do, putting up a short and angry scene....Finally I was literally dragged out to the center of the field to meet the unknown 'lady'. "She' put out a hand in an apparent gesture of good will. I grasped it with my right hand, then with my left, I reached out and pulled the cap and wig off 'her' head.
