When we reached Tom, much to our relief, he was alive, so we rushed him immediately to the hospital tent. On the way a [[crossed-out]] tought [[/crossed-out]] thought cropped into my mind: Wonder if the 'Cutie' from the ferryboat was in the [[crossed-out]] grandsta [[/crossed-out]] grandstand, and if this was enough blood to gratify her sadistic little empty head.

In the tent, we discovered, much to our consternation that the nurse who should have been on the job, was not to be found. A quick and superficial examination showed that Tom had broken his jaw and one side of his collarbone. The doctor seemed to think that to avoid trouble, Tom's jaw should be set immediately.

"Here, you,",said the Doctor pointing to me, "Hold this over the nose and keep holding it there till I tell you to take it off!;"

So I [[crossed-out]] Heal [[/crossed-out]] held the anesthetic cone over Tom's nose while the doctor set his jaw. Tom was bleeding rather freely from other injuries. My new and very beautiful flying suit became a patchwork of splattered blood from neck to knees.

By this time Tom's mother and two of the sisters came to the tent, and being Chinese, there was no emotional outburst although all three women were trembling violently. The doctor assured them that Tom was not dangerously [[crossed-out]] inured [[/crossed-out]] injured. I was sto struck by their mute suffering that I too, tried to comfort them, but even after the ambulance had come and gone, they just stood, apparently unable and unwilling to make a move.

Without ever thinking of my part in the Meet, I went looking for their chauffer. I knew right [[crossed-out]] were [[/crossed-out]] where to find him down back and under the grandstand. He knew nothing of the accident but was seriously engaged in some sort of Chinese gambling game. I never did find out if he was ahead or behind in the won-lost but I hoisted him out of there and got him and the women on their way home.
