BALLOON OVERTAKEN BY AN AUTOMOBILE.

(SpeciaL to The World.)
PITTSFIELD, Mass., Nov, 9.-Cortlandt Field Bishop, of Lenox, President Of the Aero Club of America, won the aero cup to-day, a trophy presented by Alan R. Hawley, of New York, for the pursuit of a balloon by automobiles. The ascension was made from the Aero Club Park in this city, at noon to-day. Mr. Hawley, the donor of the cup, being piloted in the balloon L'Orient, by J.C. McCoy, of New York, a pupil of Lieut. Lahm, the international cup holder.

slowly drifting, called for the exercise of good judgment. Mr. Bishop followed the bag closely and was at all times nearly under the sphere. His auto arrived in North Adams in time to allow Leo Stevens, who was with Mr. Bishop, to help pull L'Orient down from the sides by a drag rope.

The Balloon landed at 3.06 o'clock after having drifted twenty-eight miles and Mr. Bishop presented his card at 3.07 and was declared by Mr. Hawley who was the sole judge of the race to be the winner of the cup. Frank [?] ttsneld, arrived at the balloon landing place at 3.10. Mr. LaPorte entered a protest, stating that his car reached a point nearer the balloon than Mr. Bishops, but the protest was not allowed.

Speaking of the race Mr. Hawley said: "It is not one out of ten times that automobiles have any chance in following a balloon. This was one of the days. The cup which Mr. Bishop has won is a copy in some respects of the international Cup which Lieut. Lahm won in France. It represents a balloon with net and basket. The basket is to be the standard. Across the balloon surface is an automobile in relief. The landing was the most successful I ever saw."
