Airships, a few of which
comparatively successful, are
new invention; but in 1679 a pamphlet was written by Francesco Lana expounding the theory of ships which would navigate the air as well as the sea.

and is a tall,
athletic-looking man. He wears a little
black mustache. Yesterday afternoon he
was dressed in a black frock coat and
white waistcoat, and had the aspect of a
natty clergyman. His past business ex-
perience has been that obtained largely as
an advertising man for a big Broadway
dry goods store.
While his wealthy father, a white-
haired man, stood by, he took occasion to
ward off the dreaded Dowie simile as the
outset.
"I, John Wall," the newcomer said,
"don't claim to be anything but John
Wall, just plain John Wall. I am natural
and I want to establish right down here
on the earth a Comrade Kingdom. My
movement is simply a common-sense one,
which we hope to push through. Dowie
was against all creeds, while we respect
them all."
An Intelligent-Looking Audience
Perhaps one hundred people, all of them
well-dressed, intelligent-looking men and
women, assembled at the Berkeley Ly-
ceum Theatre to witness the launching of
the National Church, timed for 3 P. M.,
but which did not take place until 3:10
P. M. With the exception of three report-
ers, all these people were apparently
earnest sympathizers with the new move-
ment. When John Augustus Wall had
finished his speech they applauded him
long and vigorously. Then they all wait-
ed until after the service to shake his
hand and wish him success.
In the invitation he sent out for the
meeting yesterday afternoon John Au-
gustus Wall announced that his church
was to be "a party different from
all others," and one whose only creed was
to be the Golden Rule. His circular said:
Do you believe in Moses, Jesus, Mahomet, Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln, Roosevelt, Emerson, Edwin Markham, Elbert Hubbard,
Ella Wheeler Wilcox, Darwin, Huxley, Paine, Ingersoll, Bryan, Hughes, Hearst, or Brisbane? Are you an Atheist, Infidel, Moralist, Spiritual-ist, Jew, Christian, or Ethical Culturist? Are you living in a secluded furnished room, a pal-ace, a tenement, or a brownstone residence? [
