GLOBE New York 2 Feb 1907 Balloon Ascension Fifty Years Ago. The recent decision of the Aero Club of America to conduct an international balloon race in St. Louis next October recalls to the minds of the older citizens the fact that the city was honored some fifty years ago with a balloon ascension that developed into a world's record. Though half a century has elapsed since that memorable ascent, it is found that but little progress, if any, has been made toward the solution of the aerial navigation problem by balloons. Next October the Aero Club of St. Louis and the members of the Aero Club of America, in competition with the aerial navigators of half a dozen European nations, hope to establish a record and to demonstrate the practicability of the huge gas bags as the means of locomotion through the air. The record made in 1859 from St. Louis continued to be such for the world for forty-one years, or until Comte Henri de la Vaulx made his wonderful flight from Paris to Russia in 1900. John Wise, one of the greatest aeronauts in the world for several years, was the hero of the trip made from St. Louis on July 1, 1859. He was accompanied on his perilous voyage by three other men, one of them being William Hyde, a reporter on the Missouri Republican, now the Republic. The trip, which terminated at North Adams, Jefferson County N.Y., became the topic for conversation throughout the country and Europe for months afterward. Since that period, and until within a year or so, ballooning has ceased to be a matter of great interest in the United States, but recently a great revival has taken place and stimulated by the feats of European aeronauts, Americans have taken up the subject and in October a brave attempt will be made in St. Louis on the part of the Yankee air voyageurs to wrest from their European brethren the record made by Comte Henri de la Vaulx.— St. Louis Republic WORLD New York - 2 Feb 1907 Aero Club's Side Show at Fair Dr. Julian B.
