Leonard Town July 9th 1866.

Sir:
In compliance with and by authority of your order No 43 issued to and appointing me in conjunction with Captain Gates in charge of the Freedmen of St Mary's Co Md. to lay a fair rental valuation on the real estate of Joseph Forrest called Cat Creek and little Cat Creek generally known as the Sand Gate farm now occupied and held as a Governt farm from the 18th day of June 1866 to the 5th day of December 1866 I called at the headquarters of Capt Gates on Saturday the 7th instant who received me very courteously and showed me the estate and the growing crops thereon & gave me every opportunity of viewing the same.

The estate is said to contain about 1100 acres was originally worked in several farms, & had on it a storehouse, a steam saw and grist mill and at the landing place a long wharf where steamers to and from Baltimore touched and received and landed freight and passengers  The crop of wheat
