4 AM - Tremendous cannon shots announced Independence Day - followed by gun shots and a trumpet blowing. Needless to say, this was followed by the barking of all the dogs in the neighborhood until at 5. music & the birds continued the cacophany of sound. No sleep since then. Breakfasted with the children at 7 & went back to bed during the day - (after spending a hour in the garden with them) Read Time Magazine.

Dr. Hauser came at 5 to invite me out. Went to the Green Hotel for dancing. Was curious to see the floor show - which was not on tonight. This is the one night club - comparable to a poor, shabby beer joint in Yorktown. For a city of 800,000 this is negligable. However, when one considers the habits of the Burmese, it is understandable. Dancing is not done, drinking for women is frowned upon as well.

Had interesting talk with Hauser. He is Professor-doctor. Was assistant to Sec. of Commerce, under Wallace -

& head of census. Knows Baruch & worked with him, as well as Stevenson & Harriman.

Incidentally, because Burmese women are unapproachable, it was pitiful to see the two prostitutes - (hostesses) the men were obliged to dance with - & glad to do so. It was an object lesson in itself.

At 4.30 was ready to go to the President's House on the occasion of the 7th Independence Anniversary celebration. The grounds leading up to the House were all lit up, quite fairy like or World's Fairish in character. The gardens were set up with tables & chairs to accomodate 2,000 guests. It was a most colorful spectacle - The women wearing their most elaborate longis of fabulous fabrics, cloth of silver, gold
