Tuesday, March 15.

U Thant, secretary to U Nu will be coming to lunch & to see the portrait.

Bracha Hacohen - at 1.30 or 2.
AM - 9 to 12 - put color on second portrait of U Nu & thank heaven, did not spoil it. It is quiet & subdued - pale grey background, cream color jacket, pale rose taupe longhi & lemon yellow gaung bong. I left the drawing come through a wash of thin color - & think it is about the most successful attempt I have made with this treatment.

U Thant came early - at 12.30 Liked both portraits - particularly the one U Nu has chosen. Had no suggestions to offer - Remarked on the meditative, contemplative mood which pleased me. We had a very pleasant luncheon with Louis & U Thant throwing off cares of state & each telling a few good stories.

After lunch, arranged for Aluija to come & take photographs of the ptgs. We were through with it by 3.30 -

Tuesday, March 15.

after which I rode downtown to the SAS office. to buy art supplies, pick up my personal cards & shop for materials.

At 8 P.M. we went to Dr. & Mrs. Margaret Everton for dinner. All the guests but ourselves & Mr. Swayzee were Burmeans, Teachers of history, Fulbright Foundation, etc. U Kaung (who was formerly Minister of Education) told me he was in charge of getting ART Books for the University - and also would like to get someone to act as principal of the Art Dept. at the University for a period of 2 yrs. who would be able to coordinate the various departments and fix a stable way of procedure. (I think he was sounding me out on the matter). In any case, I was happy to hear of his ideas & offered to act as agent for the acquisition of the Art Books. He will be coming to lunch with me on Thursday at 11.30 & discuss the matter with me at length.
