Assyrian sculpture. Shouts, rather than talks. Full of strength, life & spirit. Also, along the road, one saw the tiny tree forests already in growth the past two years. In another five years, say the Israelis, with justifiable pride, you will see our forests on the parched hillsides."

Then again, their humor! One friend writes another "Moishe, I can tell you this is a "shtain-reich land." The newcomers, the Arabs & Yemenites, etc are taken to these new outposts to live, not knowing that they are on dangerous borders (although they are protected by the trained young Israeli forces - in all these new settlements. on the ocean as well. Found a sweet letter from Louis about my stay in Rangoon, which I shall cherish. "Though you are gone, the house still feels full of you. Drove with Barbara (amazed by Oleisky) past Hadera to Caesarea - the crusades stronghold - near the sea. This was wonderful to see. The excavations, where the dark red marble headless torso which was exhibited at the Metropolitan museum in N.Y. sits in splendor facing an equally beautiful white marble seated figure (also headless) What sublime nobility to see them amidst the majestic ruins, in their natural setting against age old pillars & rocks with nature and sky as their background. There is much work to be done on excavation here. Another entire village may yet be unearthed. Meanwhile there are no funds to have this done. More the pity.
