Friday April 1st

of the young men, vieing with their elders in the intensity of their prayers - the hand clapping & half dance with song - moving and heart warming.

Afterwards to the Eisners' home for dinner. They are an old couple, he 70 she 69, typical bourgeois German refugees, good hearted, kindly. The Harburgers (Perez F) came over afterwards for tea. He is head of Vocational Educ., Ministry of Labor, Jerusalem, & will be coming to New York soon for a 6 week cross country lecture tour on economic problems of Israel.

Jerusalem   Saturday, April 2'

11 Am. Visited with Rosa Ginossar, sister of David Hacohen & her sister Chana Rupin, together with Dr. Eisner. Quick, alert, intelligent & charming, Rosa is very much like her brother. Walked for an hour, back to lunch & wash my hair. - I forgot to mention the sight of the children of the orthodox Jews, playing about the synagogues yesterday. Mostly blond & fair - blue eyes, with hair cut short,

Sat. April 2.

bangs & then shoulder length curls & sidelocks. They all called out Shabbat Shalom to me & then kept jumping about on the cobblestones. In the Temple, they were not well disciplined. They wandered about, talking with each other, arms about each others shoulders, & once in a while sat down together on a front bench with a bible in their hands. Since their elders do likewise, what can one expect of them?

Strolled leisurely through the streets again in the afternoon & then to the King David Hotel for tea with the Eisners & brought them back to the hotel to have dinner with me. Quiet & restful day.

- Wonderful to hear papa's voice on the telephone when he called at 8.30 P.M. How charming to be able to call half way across the world so casually!

Sunday, April 3'

Up at 5 AM - Took bus at 7.45 for Haifa. Always the terraced, blooming earth. Jews with black, brown, grey beards, half bent over their pick axes, clearing the earth in the broiling sun. None too old for this labor.
