first wife, Mabel Knabenshue, and his children by his first wife: Salome T. Knabenshue, Glenn A. Knabenshue, Mrs. Florence J. Kestle, and Dr. Harry E. Knabenshue, now all of the Los Angeles area.

A member of that select group of pilots who flew in aircraft prior to 1916, the "Early Birds," Knabenshue was buried in the "Portal of the Folded Wings," an imposing memorial dedicated to early notable aviators in Valhala Memorial Park in North Hollywood, California, where his ashes were buried in an urn.

In one of the last tributes to his outstanding contributions to aviation, A. Roy Knabenshue was enshrined in the Aviation Hall of Fame on December 16, 1965, at Dayton, Ohio. In the ceremonies, in which Jimmy Doolittle served as Honorary Chairman and which were attended by many aviation notables, Knabenshue was honored for his "outstanding contributions to aviation by early public demonstrations of balloons and steerable balloons; by designing, building and demonstration early dirigibles; and by managing airplane exhibition teams."
