Forty Years in Aviation
On his Eightieth Birthday, August 7, 1956, Lester Gardner counts half of his total life in this aviation business. Founder of Aviation magazine in 1916, he ended active military duty in World War I as an Air Service Major. He organized the IAS in 1932 and retired from active participation in 1946. He is an Honorary Fellow of The Royal Aeronautical Society and the Institute of the Aeronautical Sciences, is Honorary LL.D. of the Brooklyn Polytechnic Institute, and is a Daniel Guggenheim Medalist. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1954 established the Lester Durand Gardner Scholarship Fund of $50,000, and last year the National Aeronautic Association designated him as one of a group of Elder Statesmen of Aviation.
