Americans Eat Generously, But Not Always Sensibly
By JOSEPHINE LOWMAN
At the New England Conference on Human Nutrition, which was sponsored by the Florida Citrus Commission and met in Boston last spring, Dr. James M. Hundley said that 10 to 30 per cent of the American public do not eat enough nutritious foods. He also told us that even though this 10 to 30 per cent may get enough vitamins and minerals to bypass recognizable deficiency states, they may show chronic physical and mental fatigue, anemia and certain abnormalities of the skin, mouth, gums and eyes.
Poor nutrition can affect a person in many strange and unsuspected ways. After World War II tests were made on military men who had been subjected to severe malnutrition for more than three years. Eight years after their liberation the tests showed the following results: the men had a morality rate two to five times more than expected; they developed a great variety of disabling diseases, and even though there was no discoverable organic illness the men had reduced mental and physical energy.

Suggested Changes.
While there are not many severe cases of malnutrition in this county you can safely say that 10 to 30 per cent is getting less than the best amount of essential nutriments.
Doctor Hundley suggested the following changes in the diet of average men and woman: Consume more protective foods such as milk products, fruits, vegetables and protein foods; eat fewer "empty calories" such as fats, oils, sugar and syrups; decrease fat intake to match energy requirements and to maintain energy requirements and to maintain proper weight.

Sneaky Enemy
Doctor Hundly said, "A germ, you know at once. Poor nutrition you may not know for years." It often takes time for the results of poor nutrition to show up. The American diet is high in fat and the fat content of the diet is increasing. Since fat has been correlated to some degree with the hardening of the arteries the elimination of visible fat seems'a wise measure.

For grand jury action.
If convicted, she faces up to five years and a $10,000 fine, plus probable deportation. She had taken out first citizenship papers.
Immigration and FBI officers uncovered the elaborately organized call girl ring while conducting investigations to learn why some of her operatives had overstayed their authorized visiting time in the U.S., the prosecutor said.
Nela's courtesy to her clientele went far beyond the mercenary business of setting up assignations, according to Keefe.
"She was meticulous in her fashion and yearly sent out fancy embossed, engraved Christmas cards to subscribers," he explained.

Fantastic Take
"The yearly proceeds from her racket were fantastic and are simply impossible to estimate at this time."
Another official observed that Nela "in our opinion is the heir apparent to Polly Adler," New York's phohibition era bordello queen, now better known as an authoress and student of European culture.
Polly, who unfolded her own story several years ago in the book "A House Is Not a Home," flourished on a luxurious scale on the East Side and was running a nine-room apartment just off Fifth Ave. with three baths and a bar when the cops closed her out in 1935.
A dozen times or more Polly had tripped out of court free as air. But that time a magistare fined her $500 and sent her to the workhouse to scrub floors for 30 days. Uncle Sam then demanded $16,000 in income tax on her unreported gains. She settled for $12,425.
It was the end, or nearly so. Once or twice more she was brought in on the old charge, only to be released. But times had changed. The old freedom of operation had ended.
So America's most famous bawdy house keeper took the last step, she wrote a book.

So you're the proud owner of a new carpet? Don't be disturbed if it sheds wool, as most new ones do. Vacuuming of a good carpet will remove the excess wool.

sitions in the world, who after all, were nothing but grown-up boys out for a good time and playing away like children." (Knabenshue was only 28 at the time).

Liked Dizzy Heights
In the same article he pointed out: "Landsmen may think that dizziness would be one of the perils of the aeronaut, but it is not so. I take pleasure, when I have the time, in looking down on the landscape. There is something about the motion of a balloon or airship which relives the voyager entirely of the dizzy feeling which he experiences when standing on a high building."
He gives the reader a glimpse into his innermost thoughts before take-off. "I must admit a crowd makes me nervous. You never know what people are gong to do. They may clip off a piece of silk in all this craze for souvenirs and all their comments are heard by the aeronaut in his preparations. The onlookers and the gate receipts will show how multitudinous they are, all saying 'Do this' or 'Do that'. When I once start their voices are drowned by the puffing of the engine. That is all I can hear. But I take certain pleasure, after all, in the enthusiasm of the people."
Writing comes naturally to Knabenshue. His father S. S. Knabenshue was once an editor at The Ohio State Journal and editor-in-chief of the Toledo Blade. In 1905 he served as American Consul at Belfast, Ireland, appointed by his good friend Teddy Roosevelt.

Had Heart Attack
In 1913 Roy moved to California, but came back during War I to work on and test collapsible balloons for Goodrich. A heart attack followed by six surgical operations terminated his association with Allen Scott at International Airport, Los Angeles where he did precision design for aircraft engines. Goodyear officials planned a celebration at the Ambassador Hotel on Oct. 25, 1954, the fiftieth anniversary of the first power balloon flight but Knabenshue was in a hospital critically ill.
Among his trophies is a set of silver goblets presented at the St. Louis Exposition after the flight of the Arrow. They were to hold the "Knabenshue Cocktail" which a news-conscious bartender concocted of brandy, champagne and several liqueurs.
Knabenshue is the oldest living Early Bird. He learned to fly in a Wright plane after an hour and 45 minutes in the air.
Even in 1905, seemingly one of the maddest years in aviation development, the respected "Independent Weekly" in its science summary of the year augured the lead that winged heavy-than-air craft would take in the field. But Knabenshue remained loyal to dirigible.
The summary spoke of Knabenshue, Santos Dumont and his new powered bal-

loon, the Barton Vessel in England driven by a 32 moveable planes, but whose "performance was scarcely commensurate with its size and power."
"The future of ariel navigation as we have said is bound up with success of the aeroplane and the most promising results to date were those obtained last year by the Wright Brothers, one of whom made a flight of over half a mile in a powered biplane. It is gratifying to note that during the present year they have been carrying on their investigations."

Bennett's action? He cut the wires on his telephone and ripped the instrument out of the wall because, he explained, his wife spent too much time talking on it to her mother.

rant, and shop keepers live off the tourist trade, and 250 nudists have built homes on the isle. There is space for 2000 nudists in hotel rooms, bungalows and tents.
"The most agreeable looking nudists live in tents," remarks a French writer.
The isle is peopled with all sorts of odd chaps: a multi-millionaire Italian yachtman, a German who considers himself the reincarnation of Buddha, an Armenian who lives on seaweeds, a retired French colonel turned diviner, a defrocked Spanish priest, and a practitioner of the Assyrian-Babylonian magic. One man parades about like Adam, holding a closed umbrella.
The French navy has outlawed "integral nudity in public places."
