At 10:35 a.m. on December 17, 50 years to the day and minute from the Wrights' history-making venture into the air, their first flight will be re-enacted by an early (1910) Wright pusher-type plane. This plane will take off from the exact spot where the Wrights' first "flyer" left the ground, and at the same speed as the earlier craft will fly down the beach. As it returns to the take-off point, it will be passed by the latest, fastest jet aircraft.

Months of preparation and years of planning have gone into the program for the Golden Anniversary celebration, which will be much greater than the annual one-day ceremonies which have been held at the monument for the past quarter-century. The sponsoring organizations and their leaders include the Kill Devil Hill Memorial Society, with General Frank P. Lahm, U.S.A. retired, of Dayton, Ohio, president; and Miles L. Clark, Elizabeth City, N.C., chairman; the Air Force Association, headed by George C. Kennedy with Ralph V. Whitener as promotion director; the National Park Service, Conrad L. Wirth, director, and Horace Dough, superintendent of Wright Memorial; and the North Carolina 50th Anniversary Commission, headed by Governor William B. Umstead, with Carl Goerch, Raleigh, as Chairman.

A steering committee responsible for the arrangements includes Elbert Cox of the Park Service, Wade S. Marr of the Memorial Society, and Clark, Whitener and Goerch.

Senators and congressmen of the national committee on the flight anniversary will come from far away as California to honor the Wrights on December 17.

The Civil Aeronautics Administration will install a special operations set-up at Manteo airport to the south in order to handle the aircraft bringing visitors to the area. Refreshment stands will be installed in the vicinity of the memorial to provide food for spectators, and hotels, motor courts and guest homes will be open to accommodate over-night visitors at Nags Head, Manteo, Kill Devil Hills, and Kitty Hawk.

Information about accommodations in the area is available from the Nags Head Chamber of Commerce, Nags Head, North Carolina.

I am sending this out to E. B's in case you miss the information in the newspapers. Hope to see you there.
