WHO'S AT THE CONTROLS?

It would seem simple to determine just which one of the Wright Brothers was at the controls of that "airplane" on the epoch-making day in December, 1903 when the two Daytonians successfully flew for the first time.

But the question keeps popping up in the mass of inquiries that the Chamber is asked each year.

"Was it Wilbur or Orville and how can you prove it?

Many people have their own versions of just what went on and who did what in regard to the Wright Brothers, just as they have for all the myriad problems that face a dynamic, thriving community as it expands.

But like trying to document the fact that it was actually Orville who made that first flight, many people don't want to be confused by the facts or take the time to really understand. They'd rather be emotional, argue a while, than to get right to the heart of the matter, make the decision on the basis of sound reasoning and proven facts. Don't confuse me with the facts, they say, and then they wonder what's happened to progress.

Progress bogs down faster in a morass of half-truths and opinions than in any other way. Leadership develops from proper application of the facts. Who's at the controls?

For the stories on aviation in this first, special one-topic issue of DAYTON, U.S.A., the editors wish to acknowledge the valuable assistance of the Information Officers of the Air Force Logistics Command, Aeronautical Systems Division, Wright-Patterson Air Force, particularly Colonel Robert Good, Robert Maltby, Ron Greene and Air Force Historians Dr. Paul Davis and Phillip Pollock. Without their help the material on Wright-Patterson and its achievements could not have been presented.

Other assistance was provided by James Jacobs, president of the Aviation Hall of Fame; and L. E. O'Neil, chairman of the Chamber's of Aviation committee.
