Aviation in Dayton continued

to Dayton in January, 1959; and Lake Central Airlines, July, 1953, a regional carrier serving 60 communities mainly in Ohio, Indiana and Michigan.

Equipment, serving Dayton on these five airlines, encompasses a complete spectrum of aircraft types: giant Boeing 707 jets, and their smaller brothers, the 727's; Douglas DC-6's and DC-7's; Super Constellations and Convair liners. Lake Central initiated a turboprop service December 1 through Dayton with a fleet of French-built Nord 262's, as its stalwart DC-3's became a rarity at last. The trunk airlines will soon complete the phase out of their piston-engined planes on Dayton routes as the second-generation short-range jets-Boeing 737's, Douglas DC-9's, Caravelles-join their fleets. In a very few years, Dayton airport visitors will regard the propeller as an antique just as today's passengers regard a Ford Tri-motor of the 1920's.

Just how many passengers use Dayton's air gateway annually? Scheduled airlines estimated in 1963 that 735,000 travelers arrived or departed here. Today's figures probably will approach the 900,000 mark with tremendous growth in air travel forecast for the future. But that's not everyone who uses the airport. Surverys indicate that, for every ticketed passenger, an average of 2.5 persons visit the airport to greet him or wish him bon voyage-that's another 2,250,000 persons.

And then, there are thousands of annual arrivals and departures of business and private aircraft. This is currently estimated to be around 300,000 persons annually. This all adds up to some 3,450,000 people who will use the facilities of the James M. Cox Dayton Municipal Airport this year-not counting "enroute" passengers who deplane at Dayton for brief periods; or those who work at the 25 businesses and four federal agencies housed there or those who visit the airport as tourists or conduct business there.

The passenger and cargo chart shows growth rate experienced at Dayton's municipal airport and indicates that improved air service-bigger planes, more frequent schedules, more routes-does not divide a static market but rather creates new, larger markets. This will continue. It is, therefore, of prime importance that Dayton's airport planners project future needs with wisdom and vision. It is essential that one of Ohio's largest airports may continue to grow in this area which will demand ever increasing air transport service.
