Dear Mr. Knabenshue:

It was pleasant talking with you on the phone yesterday regarding Year's Pictorial History of Flight, and I was sorry to learn that our letter of May 16th had not already reached you. Upon checking, I found that it was addressed to you at Trailer Town Park, Monrovia, California -- so it is clear why you did not receive the letter.

I am enclosing information about Year's Pictorial History of Flight on which we are now at work editorially, and on which we begin our page layouts within the next two weeks for going to press on the various sections in the book. As you will notice, the book covers from man's earliest efforts to fly up to the present and with a glimpse into the future. I am sending to you under separate cover a copy of the Mid-Century Edition of Year (which covers world events and national events from 1900 to 1950.) It will give you some ideas of our page layout and editorial treatment. I hope that you find the book personally interesting and informative and a worth-while addition to your library.

On my trip east -- as I mentioned to you on the phone -- several of your friends suggested that we get in touch with you in particular reference to the first section covered in our book having to do primarily with gliders, balloons, dirigibles, etc.. We would appreciate it greatly if you could rough out a brief 200, 300, or 400 word statement which we could use as an introduction to the first era that covers balloons, dirigibles, etc.. We are most interested in having that one person who is most representative of a given era write the brief introduction for that era -- and all of those with whom I have talked are agreed that you would be the [[underlined]] the [[/underlined]] person.

Your brief statement might want to include something a bout your experiences and your opinions in the field of flight of yesterday, and perhaps your opinion on how the development of aviation has affected the course of humanity. If you have a glossy print picture of yourself on hand we would appreciate receiving it (we will of course return it) to reproduce on the page with your statement, and we also want to have your signature (written in dark ink) for reproduction at the bottom of your brief article. Should you have any photographs that you think might be logical for inclusion in Year's Pictorial History of Flight -- but yet would not interfere with publication of your own book -- we would appreciate seeing these with an eye to including some in the book.

After you receive this letter and have had a chance to go over the book I would appreciate it very much if you would call me collect at either Arizona 9-5489 (my home) or Arizona 9-7729 (the Year office.) Thank you in advance for your interest in our editorial project on Year's Pictorial History of Flight.

Very truly yours,
Baldwin H. Ward
