COPY

THE SECRETARY OF THE INTERIOR
WASHINGTON

May 2, 1941

The Honorable,

The Secretary of War.

Sir:

Reference is made to letter of April 14 from this Department, copy of which is attached, requesting an allocation of $45,000 to the National Park Service for use in connection with the two autogiros recently transferred from the War Department.

It is understood that the $300,000 appropriated under the Act of June 30, 1938 (Public No. 787 - 75th Congress) was used to purchase two Helicopters leaving a balance of $45,000 which must be retained by your department to defray costs in connection with design changes, etc.; consequently, that sum is not available for allocation as requested. It is further understood that certain War Department appropriation items are now before the House Appropriations Committee for consideration.

It is requested that you include in your estimates the item of $45,000 to be appropriated under the provisions of the above-mentioned Act of June 30, 1938 for allocation to the National Park Service of this Department.

Very truly yours,

(Sgd.) A. J. Wirtz
Acting Secretary of the Interior
