Aug 27th  Florence

There is a real European crisis now - with no trains running through Germany, no gas in Italy after 3 days, no boats sailing except U.S. [[strikethrough]] acco [[/strikethrough]] ones, & no accomodations on them available for 3 weeks. No one wants war, & Poyo & I somehow don't think there is going to be one, [[strikethrough]] any [[/strikethrough]], but the whole world is on tenderhooks. We had real difficulty in Germany with gas, & now [[strikethrough]] are [[/strikethrough]] our Rex accomodation for Sept 6th is cancelled by Italy - so that the 20th is our best hope, unless things improve overnight. Radio news & extras abound everywhere, & we feel it is a matter of hours. Yesterday my whole trousseau was stolen in my big new wardrobe suitcase, so that the thrilling arrival in Florence, of all art-pregnant dreams, was welcomed by visits to the police station.
