When I was staying with Babs & John - I heard innumerable amusing stories. When John [[strikethrough]] & B [[/strikethrough]] was canvassing before the elections against Isaac Foote someone got up & talked in favor of Foote. He said[[strikethrough]] had been [[/strikethrough]] "There was a man sent to us by God, & his name was Isaac Foote" - to which John got up immediately & said "I beg your pardon Sir, but there was a man sent by God, and his name was John." I wouldn't have believed he had the wit and quickness for such a thing, & if he goes on this way, there must be more than meets the eye. [[strikethrough]] Little [[/strikethrough]] speaking of God - I jump to little [[strikethrough]] four [[/strikethrough]] three year old Timmy, who has recently been read a childrens bible. He said to the nurse the other day - "now Nanny - were going to play something - so you be Mary & I'll be Jesus and" etc. [[strikethrough]] One day [[/strikethrough]]

About two weeks ago Monseur Laval was supposed to speak at a French meeting, & as he was absent, an English lady who speaks French no better than the average Englishman got up & announced [[strikethrough]] with [[/strikethrough]]

in her best French "Monseur Laval regrette beaucoup qu'il ne peu pas d'etre ici, mais il est dans sons cabinet avec beaucoup de papier" (!). Another story is about a political lady who had been speaking already 3 times that evening at a meeting. Upon being asked for the fourth time she arose & said "Mr so & so has had me on the floor three times this evening but I refuse to let him get me there the fourth time!" Babs & John gave me a huge sherry party all in my honour - which impressed me beyond words, though again I felt like a "Swann out of water" most of the time, & though I knew she had to give a paying off party anyway whether I sailed before it or not, & a cousin was a good excuse.

She did it extremely well - introducing everyone - & plucking people away from each other & transplanting them with new ones to talk to. This is a good system if few people know each other which was true there, but because of that one was particularly glad when one finally did find someone one know, so it was particularly painful to have them

Transcription Notes:
Instead of saying he's in his office with lots of paperwork, the lady is saying he is in the toilet with lots of (toilet) paper....
