Evening lecture presented at the New York Studio School

Art:
- Art is history.
- Art is as old as man.
- For me, art is as essential as breathing.

On Recognition:
- Some artists have never received any recognition. . . say that I've not received very much, but there is not enough bitterness, anger or resentment to make me stop working.

On Painting:
- In the Renaissance the space was drawn back to a single point on the horizon (perspective); in Cubism the space is frontal.
- Caligraphy is something that I have always been interested in.
- I had a period I call "Grey Period", a state of anxiety that built up in the transition from Hofmann to Pollock; just masses of grey pigment built up until I came through with my Little Image painting.
- I've stopped working several times for periods of time. I don't carry guilt because I'm not working; I just want to be around when it opens up.

Hofmann and Pollock Conversation:
Hoffman: You don't work from nature, you work by heart. That's no good. You will repeat yourself.
Pollock: I am nature.

New York Art Scene:
- The art scene today has never been so wide open. No one turns anything down. In my time there were specifics.
- It's marvellous to have a climate, but an individual opens the door.
- For my kicks and illuminations I keep going back further in time. It is
