Lease for Houses and Tenements Only.

Memorandum of an Agreement made this 14th day of February 1868. between Bvt Maj Capt Richard Dillon VRC. A.S.A. Com Financial Agent of the Bureau of Refugees, Freedmen and Abandoned Lands, as provided for by the Acts of Congress respectively approved March 12, 1863, and July 2, 1864, and March 3, 1865, for taking charge of, and leasing abandoned and confiscable lands and houses, in the Sub. Dist of Beaufort State of North Carolina and Elijah Room of Beaufort in the County of Cartret and State of North Carolina

Witnesseth, that in pursuance of said Acts, and of the instructions of the Commissioner of the Bureau, the said Agent, for and in behalf of the United States, agrees, upon the terms hereinafter contained, to [[strikethrough]] lease [[/strikethrough]] gratutiously to the said Elijah Room from the 29th day of January, 1868, [[strikethrough]] from month to month, either party hereto being at liberty to terminate this lease at the end of any month from the date hereof, [[/strikethrough]] the following described premises: to wit Part Lot No 181 Situated on Pine St in the Town of Beaufort Cartret County N.C. in accordance  with instructions from the Asst Comm dated Bureau R F & A L Hd Qrs Asst Commr State N.C. Raleigh N.C. January 29th 1868

And the said - hereby agrees to pay the said Agent - dollars per month, for each month from the date hereof, so long as he shall continue in possession of the said premises, and to pay the rent of each month in advance, and at the expiration of this lease as aforesaid to deliver possession of the said property to the said Agent, of his successor, in as good a condition as the same is now in; loss by fire or other unavoidable injury excepted.
