Desiring to combine as much personal profit  [[strikethrough]] poss [[/strikethrough]] possible with the work, I have followed the plan of separating the shells first by families, then noting the distinctions, next by genera and finally determining so far as possible the specific differences. This method consumes considerable time, especially as the collection is in a very confused state, and the lables, when existing, apt to be misleading. I have however determined the following families and genera.

Ostreidae. Ostrea, Anomia, Placuna, Placunopsis, Pecten, Hinnites, Lima, Spondylus, Pedum, Plicatula.  

Aviculidae. Avicula, Malleus, Irusella, Gervillia, Perna, Inoceramus, Pinna
