Washington, October 8, 1885.

Prof.G.Brown Goode,
Assistant Director,
U.S.National Museum.

Dear Sir:

In response to your memorandum of October 1, in relation to a supplementary report on the work of the Museum for the six months ending June 30, 1885 I have the honor to report that the department of Mollusks under my charge has been making steady progress in administering on the mass of accumulations of the last ten years, and except in regard to the New Orleans exhibit has little more to offer than a record of such uneventful work which is indispensable for making the collection useful for the paleontologist or conchologist who may wish to consult it. The most interesting accession during the period was a small lot of Japanese shells contributed by Mr. Uchimura, which contained several great rarities.

The preparation of material for the New Orleans Exposition which absorbed several months time prior to the first of the year, was completed under the direction of Dr. Stearns so that the boxes containing the same and the cases required for exhibiting the specimens reached their destination and were ready for arrangement early in January.

About the middle of the month Dr. R.E.C.Stearns, Assistant Curator, proceeded to New Orleans and remained there until the arrangement of this department was completed.
