Mrs. H.P. DAVISON
Locust Valley
Long Island. N.Y.

Dear Mr. DAVISON,

We thank you for your kind lines of July 27th and apologize for the delay in answering which is due to the fact that during the summer months our office was closed.

"La Frileuse" which Mr. DAVISON bought from the late Mr. Jacques SELIGMANN is very well known, not only to us, but to anyone who would be interested in sculpture. As to various copies of this model it is impossible to give you an accurate list.

The model is known both as "La Frileuse" and "L'Hiver".

Like all the works of celebrated artists which met with great success at the time of their creation, this subject had to be done several times in answer to orders which HOUDON received.

We know of several other statures which, with slight variations, represent "La Frileuse": The Museum in MONTPELLIER owns a marble opne which is the one exhibited by the artist in 1773. The LOUVRE Museum has a bronze one. The Princesse de FAUCIGNY-LUCINGE has a marble one. The late Mr PAULICE had in his collection a terra-cotta 7 inches high and Mr. LEMAITRE a plaster model.

In 1759 at the HOUDON sale a terra-cotta and several other small ones were sold.

It is interesting to compare "La Fileuse" to the "Diana" which was created by HOUDON a
