Mr. Germain Seligman,
Jacques Seligmann and Co., Inc.,
5, East 57th Street,
New York, 22.

Dear Mr. Seligman,

Many thanks for your letter of the 4th April and for your kind co-operation in the matter of the two pictures by Hall.

Immediately I heard from you I passed on your very reasonable request regarding the likely price this client would be willing to pay and the following is a copy of the reply which I have just received -

'With reference to your suggestion that I should ask my client what he would be willing to pay, I must say that this is quite out of the question. The main thing is to find out if the pictures could be found and what the present owner wants for them. Both my client and I know that these pictures will not be cheap, but we can certainly not discuss a price beforehand. I hope that you can make this clear to your contact in New York and that he will proceed with his search.'

I am sorry that this reply is not more helpful as I personally quite see your point about any unnecessary waste of time and the advantage of being able to name a price when approaching an owner in this way. However, I do hope that you will be able to do something further in this matter and I look forward to hearing from you again.

Kindest regards,
Yours sincerely,

/s/ Clifford Duits
