in need of a clerk who can prepare written labels, for exhibition purposes of sufficient elegance of handwriting to be above criticism. The printing of such labels takes such long periods of time, for even a small order, as to be practically unavailable in the majority of cases.

The foul smells, draughts and noise of the main Smithsonian hall have had their usual effect on the quality of the work done in the temporary quarters on the gallery and on the health of those who have been obliged to work there. Later in the season I shall submit some suggestions by which the first and worst annoyance may be somewhat mitigated.
