Florida has more syphilis cases per 100,000 population than any other state, according to the U.S. Center for Disease Control (CDC). The map above, based on CDC statistics for the fiscal year ending Sept. 30, 1977, shows that Florida's syphilis rate of 59.9 cases per 100,000 is exceeded only by the District of Columbia, which had a rate of 277.8 Idaho had the lowest syphilis rate in the nation, 1.9 cases per 100,000. The national average for syphilis cases was 31.1.
