One expert attending the National Glider Contests has the distinction of making that event possible. He is Prof. R.E. Franklin of the University of Michigan, designer, builder and flyer of gliders. With a few exceptions he has constructed all of the gliders on the field. Franklin is at extreme left in photo at upper left, with his son, Wallace, an accomplished pilot, and Mrs. H.B. Brittan of Ypsilanti, Mich., also a glider flyer. Mrs L.W. Oliphant, secretary-treasurer of the Franklin company, is in the group at right. Captain Russell B. Holderman of Leroy is directing removal of a Bowlus sailplane from its carriage at upper right. At lower right is Lieutenant Thomas Phillips, who brought his sailplane from the Canal Zone to fly it in Elmira's contest. Flyer with dog is "Daredevil Tom" DeMann of Binghamton, who will do parachute drop from plane Saturday as the airport's contribution to stunts at the meet. Martin Schempp, Pittsburgh, who made more than three-hour flight Thursday afternoon in his Haller-Hawk sailplane is shown at right.
