more rapidly by the use of a launching winch. The winch is a mobile unit which may be driven from point to point on any ridge under its own power. When the unit is located the driving power is switched over to the winding drum and the winch is thus ready for the operation of launching gliders. If for some reason the tow line attached to the glider cannot be released by the pilot when it should be, the winch operator can sever it and permit the glider to safely continue in flight. All winches in use have this device incorporated in their construction. 

Should the promised soaring wind never arrive, but the aerologist in charge states that successful soaring may be accomplished at higher altitudes above the ridge thru the use of thermals, the pilots resort to the power plane tow for launching. In fact, this method is becoming more commonly used for all launchings. In fact, this method employed at this 13th Annual National Soaring Contest. The soaring planes are towed up into the area of thermic activity and there released at the will of the glider pilot, while the power plane descends to the ridge for the next tow. Contrary to popular belief, the loads imposed on a soaring plane in power plane tow are less than through any other form of launching, and because of this power plane tow is increasingly popular. When there are many sailplanes to be launched, dual, triple and even quadruple tows have been safely made. In such cases, when the desired altitude is reached over the area where thermic activity is located, each pilot may select his particular cloud and gon on with his flight.

It is to be understood by the spectator that these airplane tows contribute nothing to records of soaring craft. In the matter of altitude, it is altitude above point of release which constitutes the pilot's accomplishment, distance from point of release in cross country, and time from moment of release in duration. All the airplane tow contributes is the chance for the sailplane to reach soaring conditions which would otherwise be out of reach. 

In each National Contest since the first, short wave radio had been used for communication from ridge to ridge and from airport to ridge. At first the messages were sent by Continental code, and a local contingent of radio "hame" from the Radio Relay League demonstrated their ability without question to keep the various points of soaring activity in constant communication. In later contests code was replace by telephonic type of communication. This immediately gave rise to communication between the ground and a soaring plane, suitably equipped.
