in the event judgement is found to be poor. The same additional premiums are proposed in regard to the technique of the pilot as to whether it is excellent, good, fair or poor, and the same schedule of extra premiums also holds true as respects similar degrees of other mental and moral characteristics of the pilot. 

THE investigation of the committee in determining the propose premium charges disclosed that the group of transport pilots annually flying between 50 and 499 hours showed the best morality, and that there is a definite improvement in mortality among pilots having more than 500 total hours in the air, with every indication that this improvement continues in each subsequent group. For that reason the committee selected the arbitrary number of 4,090 flying hours as the maximum total desirable experience, as it seemed wise to set so high a classification with an eye to the future when a much larger group of pilots than at present will have that amount of experience. 

In connection with the investigations in regard to mortality, the committee also found that there was a definite increase in morality, the committee also found that there was a definite increase in mortality for any grouping of pilots with as much as 100 hours in excess of 500 hours a year, but the benefit of the doubt in the schedule of ratings was given pilots flying between 500 and 750 hours a year where it is done under the supervision of qualified flight personnel. The committee also found that judgement and technique are responsible for roughly an equal number of deaths in the groups of pilots whose records were examined. Physical impairments among pilots were found to have little if any appreciable effect upon the mortality, due to the fact that the thorough examination given pilots excludes the cases of medical impairment which would seriously affect flying ability. The committee in this report concluded therefore that the pilot applicant for life insurance will presumably be considered medically as a life insurance risk.

In conclusion the report stated that the committee by its investigations aimed to devise an underwriting method which would give to the particular pilot risks the benefit of their own excellence, thus eliminating the unsound and inequitable application of an average premium rate to large groups of risks of exceedingly different abilities 

Moyle and Allen are "Welcomed" Home

SO short-lived is fame in aviation during the open season for transoceanic flights that it was necessary for the Los Angeles papers to insert a paragraph describing just what Don Moyle and Cecil Allen had attempted when they landed in their own home town, with escort of military planes, at the Grand Central Airport in Glendale, Calif. They landed on October 11th, just about a month later than they anticipated when they left Japan to make a nonstop flight from Tokyo to Seattle. The trip was to take them only a few hours but they were detained on an uninhabitated island off the coast of Kamchatka where they tarried for eight days existing on sea gulls, and a banana or so which they had taken with them. The world had given up hope, nut not so the parents.

The ceremonies were beginning to lag. A representative of the Japanese newspaper, the alert Tokyo Asahi, had taken a few minutes to present a check for 5,000 yen, or $2,500, to the men in recognition of their daring attempt to cross the Pacific, and then began a rather long series of speeches  made by the representative of the governor, the representative of the mayor, down to the representative of the manager of the airport; when someone in the crowd happened to suggest that the parents of the boys might have something real to say. Don Moyle's father got up and without a set speech, or the aid of gestures or oratory, told of the heartaches of a father worse son had disappeared in the windswept, cloud-infested North Pacific; of the hours of prayer, of the sympathy and help of church and friends, the interest of strangers; and then of the hour of rejoicing when the news came to them that the boys were found and were safe on a Soviet steamer. He had much more to say but the lump in his throat would no longer behave and the speech ended abruptly wit ha bearlike embrace of his son. 

There was no mention by the father of the fact that his son had tried to cross the Pacific and failed, had spend his all striving for the $25,000 prize, already won by others. Those things never entered his head. His son was alive and safe and home!

The next day Moyle met Judge Schauer who told him he would have to spend thirty days in jail for driving an automobile while intoxicated. Allen had a short visit with his wife who told him the details of the divorce proceedings she was bringing against him. 

Some people seem to get all the variety in his life they need. 

The Navy Department has awarded a contract to the Change Vought Corporation of East Hartford, Conn., for 15 observation planes, type 03U-2, and spares at a total cost of $280,650. 

United Airlines' subsidiaries, Boeing, National and Pacific Air Transport and Varney Air Lines, flew 3,033,200 miles and carried 17,980 revenue passengers and 618 tons of air mail and a substantial volume of express in the third quarter, P.G. Johnson, president of United Air Lines, announces. Passenger, mail, express and mileage all showed an increase over the previous quarter, and these items were substantially ahead of the same period last year. In September the planes flew 965,782 miles and carried 410,017 pounds of mail and 5,507 revenue passengers. 

A new performance record was established during the quarter, as ninety-eight and one-half per cent of all mileage schedules on the transcontinental, middle west, intermountain and Pacific Coast routes was completed, including ninety-seven per cent of all the mileage scheduled on the New York-Pacific Coast line. United's New York-Chicago-San Francisco line accounted for about forty per cent of the nation's air mail. About 1,500,000 mile were flown at night last quarter, considerable of it with trimotored passenger transports. The company reports longer passenger flights. The average trip on its transcontinental route is now around 800 miles. 

 United Air Lines now has an active fleet of 100 single engine and trimotored airplanes.
