The Soaring (not War...ing) 1940's The American Way by Hattie Meyers Weaver Junkin Every age has its vehicle. The Eleventh National Soaring Meet to be held in Elmira, N.Y. June 29 - July 14, 1940 will have established the sailplane glider Soaring its way into the 1940's, the vehicle come to stay. The Gay Nineties had its "iron horse". The old White steamer, the Stanley Steamer, the low slung Hupmobile snorting their ways down the rutty dirt roads to shouts of "Git a horse." Any woman who drove the dang thing was a daredevil..or was it a hussy?
