The structure just completed represents only a part of the contemplated building program. It composes the nave only, with recreational, social and educational facilities placed in the ground floor. The present unit has an overall length of 135 feet and a maximum width of 70 feet. The plan is cruciform, following the traditional plan, with the western facade containing the entrance porch facing the setting sun and the eastern end containing the chancel toward the morning sun. The general character of the group is in keeping with the Gothic spirit with a touch of the flamboyant in its traceried windows and detail, symbolical of the eternal flame. Although Gothic in spirit, a touch of the modern is feely admitted and is replete with the best of the spirit and idealism of the age in which the edifice is erected. The additional building plans include the erection of a massive memorial tower housin the carillon of bells and the educational and recreational unit.

The building committee include the Minister, the Reverend James Shera Montgomery, chairman; R. F. Camalier, secretary; Dr. Arthur C. Christie, Dr. Lucius C. Clark, W. S. Dewhirst, John Ford, H. A. Harding, Dr. Delos O. Kinsman, I. E. Shoemaker and C. E. Van Orstrand.

The official roster of the church include: Resident Bishop- William Fraser McDowell, D.D., LLD; Resident Minister- Dr. John R. Shannon; District Superintendent- Benjamin W. Meeks, D.D.; Minister- James Shera Montgomery, D.D.; Ordained Local Deacon- Deets Pickett; Local Minister- Frank E. Sutch.

Metropolitan Memorial Methodist Episcopal Church is the National Church of Methodism by resolution of the General Conference of 1852. Pews were purchased by contributors and set apart for the president of the United States, the Vice-President, the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, various states and larger cities and Canada. each is marked by a silver plate with names inscribed thereon, and all were brought from the old church to the new. On the walls of the auditorium were tablets in memory of many famous men, among them President Ulysses S. Grant, President William McKinley, Vice President Charles W. Fairbanks, General John A. Logan, Bishop John P. Newman and Justice Thomas H. Anderson, all of whom were interested in the National Church. In the dedicatory program, Dr. Montgomery has written a foreword, which he calls the "Spirit of Methodism," and which expresses the ideals of the new church and the ambitions of the old one. We reprint it below:

"The Metropolitan Memorial Methodist Episcopal Church, on this day of its dedication, in accord with its long history as the National Church, offers itself to our Capital City and to the Community of Wesley Heights in the spirit of a gorgeous, broad Christian Service. Its aim is to be a great influence and power for the high ideals in public and in private life. In keeping with its character, it is not dedicated to the cause of a narrow sectarianism, but to a Savior whose teachings are as broad as humankind. It hopes to serve the people and seek to inspire and lead them in the spirit and example of Him who spake as never man spake."

Historic Garden Pictures
To be Shown

The subject of gardens and gardening is one of much interest to the residents of the community, and it is with this thought in mind that we call to your attention the illustrated lecture, "Historic and Modern Gardens of Virginia," to be given on the evening of Monday, March 7th, 8:30 o'clock, in the ballroom of the Mayflower Hotel. The lecture is being given under the auspices of All Souls Memorial Church.
Mrs. Arthur Lloyd will talk on the historic and modern gardens, illustrating her talk with a series of fascinating slides. The program should prove of value not only because most of us have a deep interest in the gardens of Virginia, but because we will be able to glean helpful information both from the pictures and Mrs. Lloyd's talk. Not all of the gardens to be shown are large and extensive ones, for even the most imposing estates have their small and intimate garden plans.
Patronesses for the lecture include Mrs. Henry St. George Tucker, Mrs. Fairfax Harrison, Mrs. H. Lozier Dulaney, Mrs. James Dudley Morgan, Mrs. Cazinove G. Lee, Mrs. Harry B. Hawes, Mrs. William B Mason, Mrs. Cary T. Grayson, Mrs. Bratenahl, Mrs. John W. Burke, Mrs. Frank S. Bright and Mrs. Hugh S. Cumming.
