wife. Helen lived when the family was prosperous & went to Wellesley, but after their misfortunes there wasn't enough to send the others to college. However Mary went to art school in Manchester N.H. where her father was preaching & Robt. to Univ of N.H. at Durham, and he did graduate work at Harvard, got his A.M. He married then -- I don't know what he started out to be. He taught for a while. He has just sent me a funny picture of himself in a grass skirt!

Sat afternoon we took Geof & Helen to Harpers Ferry, - a lovely ride up thru the Blue Ridge. Such an apple year, the trees were bowed down with apples there. The country was lovely, but the colors not as beautiful as in N. England.

Yesterday we went to Plum Pt. Dolores was sick with a cold, but we took Sophy. She went in swimming & enjoyed herself, I think. I was coming down with this cold and felt wretched most of the day. I am better today.

Do learn how to spell Agassiz, AGASSIZ, - it gives me a pain to see Agissy! Did they cut off just the forelock! How does Grandma like it? I wish you could be more picturesque in your writing. I can't get any pictures of you at all in college, - just a lot of hurried facts. I can't see the rest of them or have an inkling of their personalities. I can't imagine a breakfast or dinner scene. I can't see how you rush along to classes or even how the classes look or where they are. You could make your writing so much richer to scatter in a few sentences that would give one an idea of how you live. You don't give any notion of Edith Foster and naturally I am curious. I expect she isn't over intelligent. How often do you have to turn in a story? How is the French? Easy? History always is horrible. I avoided it like poison all thru college and regretted it. But you can't absorb so much all at once. Where are you in it now? Do you do most of your studying in your room, evenings? or do you visit about with the girls after supper? Are you mostly with Freshman or upper class girls?

Love, Mother.
