Xmas night, 1935

Dear Doris:

When we got here and Santa read your note, he asked me to leave a letter for you, and so I have written it on the typewriter I found in th next room. I wonder if you heard me writing it. I have received the letters you sent me but have been too busy to reply to them. Santa and I never had such a hard year's work before. We have had thousands of letters from children all over the world asking for all sorts of presents. We could not always give them just what they asked for, but we have done the best we could. I did not have an electric train left, but I have given you one that shoots out sparks, and the electric ones don't do that. I hope you will like it. Santa thought we ought to leave a live mouse for your cat to play with, but I said no, you would not like to see him kill it and eat it, and I told Santa that he would like the catnip mouse you got for him just as well, and it would last longer, too.

Now we must hurry on to leave presents for other children. Think of me sometimes, throughout the year, and be as good as you can; learn to eat with your knife and fork like the big girl you are now, and perhaps I can persuade Santa to leave some nice presents for you next year. I hope you will like the modeling clay and the trees and the animals.
