Dear Doris:
It seems a long long time since I had the pleasure of writing to you. Mother is holding the cat who fills her lap & is purring beatifically. He had some smelt for supper & mother says she can smell them on his breath. I had 10 smelt for supper myself. Also ordered a Xmas Turkey.

It had been cold & snowy-feeling for several days. We saw the first snow Sunday morning, a very light one on roofs & car tops but not on the ground. It vanished in a short time.

We send off $20 to you Sat. morning so you ought to receive it today or tomorrow. After you repay the $12.50 and any other small loans you ought to have just about enough left to get you down here.

I had an extra day in town today & worked at the Nat. Herbarium & Dept. of Agric. library. Tomorrow I go out to Beltsville again.

Sunday we went to a little affair at the Arts Club for Julia Gardner, who is being sent to Japan for 6 mos. to do geological work. I got a grant of $500 from the Dept. Library for her to buy botanical books for my list of Flores. The Italian, Prof. Fenaroli, who is working here has been out to the house twice & has given me a lot of assistance. We persuaded him to accept one of my old heavy overcoats to take back with him, and mother gave him some of your outworn clothes for his two children. Hope to see you in a week's time. Be sure to let us know what time to meet you. Love S.F.B.
