NEW NEGRO OPINION

REVEREND BROOKS POINTS OUT NEW NEGRO ALLIANCE

--American women for political freedom; the struggle of the Abolitionists before the Civil War; and the prohibitionists' fight, success and present failure.
Concluding his impressive talk, Reverend Brooks urged the group to "crystalize sentiment" of all the people of Washington in favor of the buy-where-you-can-work program of the Alliance.
He said there is a great work ahead. Despite the "quitters the loyal workers must struggle on," said the speaker while showing the "inherent difficulties in any great organization." Pointing to the army airmen carrying the U.S. mails, and the attendant recent crashes, the churchman held that the price for action in the right direction cannot be too great. He called upon the young Negro to capture the spirit of sacrifice and show resentment against unjust and oppressive conditions.

ANOTHER "BYRD EXPEDITION"
(Continued from page 2)

Upon refusing, Miss Byrd was grabbed and half-carried, half-dragged to the elevator. Arriving at the first floor, she was taken to the office of the Capitol police, where she fainted. Her friends, Mrs. Paige and Miss Sears followed and arranged for her removal to her home. There she was put to bed, suffering acutely from shock.
Evidence concerning this unfortunate occurence was straightaway presented to Senator Arthur Capper of Kansas by Miss Byrd's three white companions. It looks as though there will be an investigation of the whole affair. Certainly, it is warranted, when a citizen of the United States, a woman of orderly demeanor, may be man-handled without just cause.
Partly because of the realization that the incident would receive wide circulation and partly because of the innate tendency of the white man to degrade Negroes, these was a concerted effort on the part of both head waitress and Capitol police to make it appear that Miss Byrd was rowdy, and was therefore treated in the fashion generally used for handling raucous and noisy intruders.
The actual fact, however, is that a woman of culture, a woman who has qualified to fill a position in the International Office of Geneva, Switzerland, and above all, an American citizen, who, because she happens to be a Negro, is given the treatment of a male sot.

The Senate enjoys the respect of the whole nation. It cannot afford to let the prejudices of its menial, including its police, set the policies current under the Senate Office roof. Something must be done. Failing in this, the Capitol police may find that they will have much manhandling to do until something is done.
The spirit of Carrie Nation is not dead. What she did to inspire all women to become franchise-conscious may be done by women of darker hue to secure the respect and just treatment of Negroes in general, and Negro womanhood in particular.
