Lawson and Rycraw Report Activities of League for Fair Play

Attorney Belford V. Lawson, Jr., and George H. Rycraw, officers of the N.N.A., reported at the last meeting of the executive council on their observations and contacts with the Citizen's League for Fair Play, an organization working to obtain jobs for Negroes as salespeople in certain stores in New York City.

The New York organization, it was reported, has been doing spectacular and effective work. The Citizens' League is sponsored by several social, fraternal, and church organizations, whose representatives have been picketing stores, staging mass meetings, parades, and "soap box" speeches. Their most notable victory has been the appointment of some forty girls as sales-persons in the Blumentstein Department Store, located on 135th Street.

The headquarters of the Citizens' League are situated right next door to a police station. Contrary to the experience of the N.N.A., the pickets have not been interfered with by the police, due, it is believed, to the fact that Mayor La Guardia is quite friendly disposed towards the citizens of Harlem, from whom he gets a substantial part of his political support.

Attorney Lawson, who is the chairman of the N.N.A. committee on National Contacts, hopes that in the near future cooperative efforts between the N.N.A. and the Citizens League may begin to operate. In this connection Mr. Lawson addressed a New York group on last Monday, stating the aims and the experiences of the Alliance, and he made several valuable contacts with promoters of the Citizens' League.

Lawyer Found Dying on Tracks
(Continued from page 1)

before the discovery of the body, it is reported that two men were seen on the platform of the station, and the description of one fits Giles.

Several theories are advanced as to the possible cause of the tragedy, one being that he got into an altercation with an unknown person, and after an argument, was pushed from the platform, since there was a deep gash on the scalp. It was known that within the past three months, the attorney had been involved in a number of brawls, two of which caused him to be arraigned into court.

Another angle given is that Mr. Giles had incurred the ill-will of racketeers during his incumbency in the federal attorney's office, where he had charge of prohibition cases. He was responsible for the padlocking of many thriving bootleg liquor stores in Brooklyn, and it is said that his life had been repeatedly threatened. Giles resigned his post last May, due to the change of administration, he being a Republican.

The deceased is one of three sons, the other two being noted physicians in Chicago; Dr. Roscoe Conkling Giles, and Dr. Chauncey Giles.
