I Can't Understand it!

ought to go on the stage," and he agreed with me. He said, "It's too bad they aren't on the stage now."
Ben was pretty much of a card himself in a quiet kind of way. Every once in a while he'd let off something good, like the time Big Lucas fell off on his head when he was sliding down the banisters, and one of the girls screamed, "Is he hurt?" And Ben said in the most hopeless tone of voice, "Probably not!"
I tell you Ben was a card and a real fellow, in for everything. Why, the night we all decided to go on up to Canada instead of staying there, Ben was all for it. In the end he didn't get to go himself because he wouldn't leave Sue and she couldn't leave the children, but don't let anyone ever tell you he isn't a real fellow.
We always had a live gang up there all right. No place deader than the country if you haven't. Sometimes I'd think about that and wonder how Sue and Ben ever stood it all week long with nothing going on. I asked them once that very thing. It was the week-end I took Joe and Louie up. You know those two. Joe plays the hottest sax in town and did you ever see Louie tap dance? That boy's good. I remember asking Sue and Ben that week-end how they could stand it out there all week long and nothing going on. Sue said, "It is quiet," and Ben admitted it, too.
Even so I can't see why they decided to sell their place and move to an apartment. Because it sure was one real place. I'm telling you!
