"SWING"
From the Story, "MANDY"
"Mandy," a cook, lives in Birmingham. She's in love with a "yaller" man, whom her friends call "no good." His name is Cornell, occupation "hustler." He takes Mandy's money--and blows it in on Eloise, a "high yaller." Eloise belongs to "Lem" Jackson, a fireman--who vows to kill any man if he catches one hanging around her.

Other cooks working on "South Highlands," know Cornell is unfaithful and send one of their number to warn Mandy. But Cornell has taken the pains to set Mandy right, so she refuses to listen to them. One night she is persuaded and goes to a roadhouse where one look at him, with Eloise in his arms, convinces Mandy.

The scenes shift to New York where Mandy meets Lena, whom she had helped put through school, and thru Lena, tall and handsome Ted Gregory. They give Mandy a job. Meanwhile, Eloise and Lem Jackson have preceeded Mandy to New York and changed their names to "Big" Jones and "Cora Smith." Cora has been cast as the female lead in a show but is disagreeable, boastful and unruly, finally climaxing it all by getting drunk, falling down stairs and fracturing her leg. Panic stricken, Lena recalling that Mandy had a wonderful voice, persuades her to assume Cora's role. All is well when Mandy announces she is quitting. All wonder why. Then she admits that it is Cornell who has hoboed his way to New York. He is in truth a piano player, so is taken on to play for Mandy. The show is a success. They let Mandy have her Cornell to spend her money as he wishes to, Ted and Lena get each other, and all ends well.
