We took a ride to Mt. Vernon this afternoon and came home by some of the back roads that we used to travel so often when you were little. Mother got a little pink azalea.

It has been so cold here (down to 35° officially, and down to 23° at Beltsville acc. to report) that we had to rebuild our furnace fire. It seems very much out of place this afternoon. There are one or two (or more) young mockingbirds just out of the nest around the house, so the old cat will have to start staying inside for a time. I repaired the board that had sprung out in our piazza this afternoon. Our tulips are still in flower and our lettuce is coming along. I hope we shall have more from you in the way of letters this week. Love, SFB
