Dear Faith:

I've been planning to write you a letter for a long time, but decided that the best time to do so would be on the first birthday anniversary of our little god-child, FLASH. This particular date brings back memories precious to all of the kid's admirers, doesn't it?

Remember when our rapidly growing baby gave its first gasp, took its first deep breath and let out its first cry? Remember how surprised and thrilled its parents and we were that a mere infant could have such a strong voice? People all over the United States and many in foreign countries heard that child's lusty cry and unconsciously were drawn to it. Some offered to adopt it in order to give it more luxurious surroundings and special educational advantages. Remember? Of course they meant well, but they didn't realize that the great love of the parents for their child would make adoption out of the question. They didn't realize either that FLASH, as young as it was, preferred the less smooth road, preferred to win its laurels by swallowing the old cod-liver oil with a smile, and by growing as fast as possible out of the "safety pin class" into that of an honest-to-goodness wearer of panties.

Like most babies, FLASH refused to be ignored. Remember? Unlike many babies, however, our clever little rascal learned how to keep everyone ever reaching for him, picking him up, scrutinizing his features! Guess it was natural to try to see who the little one resembled; yet after each examination, the child's admirers shame-facedly admitted that it didn't resemble anyone they knew. With a friendly, but resounding whack on the babe's back, they laughingly exclaimed, "Kid, you're an original!!" And did FLASH like that! "FLASH will always be original," said FLASH to itself.

You knew, of course, about the child's camera obsession, didn't you? It's inborn love of the black box with the all-seeing eye was very noticeable at birth. Remember? Fortunate too, for while cutting its first teeth, dear little FLASH felt that the less actually said, the better. "Say it with pictures" was and still is to a great extent its motto. When most of its teeth had come through the tender gums, this precocious child, who at birth could write quite well, decided that it would be "JOLLY" jotting the bits of social chatter that came to his ears. The keen eyes and ears of the kid missed nothing!! Remember the day we heard some girls talking about FLASH? They said. "ALEC!! Must he SE(W)ALL??? Remember those UNDERTONES the girls were discussing? Well, FLASH was and still is the root of them.

I was over to see that child a few days ago at its new home. Used to live on Florida Avenue, N. W., didn't it When have you paid your "godmotherish respects"? After all, you should keep a good check on you god-child's "doings"; especially since the little one is so very fond of you. You know, that baby has won more friends in one year than you and I have acquired in ten years or even in the whole sixteen (?) years of our young lives!! When I was leaving FLASH the other day, the darling wound its chubby but strong little arms about my neck - the child is very affectionate - loves everybody and wants everyone to love it - and cooed into my ear its profound appreciation of your past support and its dearest hope of your continued interest in its future development into finest manhood.

Do write me soon and tell me, as one god-parent to another, what you think of our god-child FLASH. If it doesn't look well to you, tell its parents; they'll thank you for it! If you know of anything which you think will assure it of continued unstunted growth, speak up and express yourself!!! Just write and give me all of your impressions of the child. It will be fun to compare notes! At the moment, however, let us stop everything to wish the little tike a very HAPPY BIRTHDAY and many more happy birthdays in the years to come!

Sincerely,
Valerie Parks
