April 26

Dear folks,

Cap Weston was funny Friday in his lecture on Basidiomycetes. He showed film of big puff-ball (giant), and told that some ambitious persons had counted the spores in it. "That figure makes international debts look like a professor's salary!'

You know, I [[underscore]] am [[/underscore]] dumb! I forgot I'd told you his name was Hector! (Thought only Duffy). [Haven't seen him again but will audit Parsons again today] With Homeric bus [[?]] I associated Darius, who, incidently [[incidentally]], gave excellent section meeting Friday .. on Richard II: he made us laugh with deep irony at Richard's speech calling Balingbroke "setting sun" just before set himself. Not that another man couldn't have, but [[underscore]] noone [[no one]] [[/underscore]] so effectively.

Bill & I accomplished something Sat. night: read "The Winter's Tale", my last Shake play. By way, took voluntary Shake exam Friday (doesn't count if bad job) for fun of it, may have raised grade, without having read 2 plays & having reviewed none. Mr. Spencer has had heart attack, and Munn [[?]] is taking over, giving easy fair exam. Richards is taking over Humanities 1b too, so I might try auditing that. Bill & I: he now knows of Duffy .. he felt a difference & worried it out of me. Yet still on good terms, going to Misa Salemnis [[?]] with him Tuesday. I feel he is too much like me, too shut off from the world, too "I-don't-give-a-damn"ish, yet giving too bitter a damn. I feel good, however, to have begun to disillusion him about me: he began to assume more pleasing male superiority.

Went to Quaker meeting last night where woman presented rather effectively her personal discoveries in Polish, German, & French work camps.

Have been working quite hard: all Friday, spending all evening in library (Harvard), all Sat & Shake at night, all Sunday save in evening at ETS: Episcopal Theological Seminary library .. near & excellent atmosphere. Am still behind in Milton only.

Next years schedule is worked out (& much delightful summer reading I must have spoken of): course on 17th c. lit. (year), in Gk. tragedy, in Eng. history, & devel. of democracy ideal; reading Greene, Locke, Schumptater [[?]] (at Harvard), & other interesting moderns .. may be worth while, may change it. but. pity that no 18th or 19th c courses given next year; no art or poetry
