LAWRENCE W. BROWN
Early Martin Pilot - Airplane Builder

Lawrence Brown was born at Columbus City, Indiana, July 7, 1895. Information is lacking concerning his early life and education.

While living in Central Point, Washington, in early 1914, he decided to learn to fly and enrolled for a course of instruction at the Glenn Martin School at Los Angeles, California. Beginning in May, he was one of four pupils taught by Martin instructor Floyd Smith on a dual-control Martin school airplane, powered by a 75 H.P. OX-5 Curtiss engine. Brown made good progress, he flew his tests for pilot license on July 12th and obtained F.A.I Certificate No. 310, dated July 21st.

After completing his flying tests, Brown surprised everyone by flying off on a joy ride over Glendale at 6,000 feet. He ended this flight in a long throttle glide back to the field and landed within a few feet of his prescribed mark. He then planned to take water-flying instruction.

Brown continued his flying practice through 1914, then in February, 1915, started flying a Christoffserson tractor biplane for the Carrranzistas under General Galles at Sonora, Mexico.
