After gradually failing health Callan passed away at Columbia Hospital, Hudson, New York, on October 8, 1958, at age 72. He was survived by a sister and a brother. Burial was in Albany Rural Cemetery.

Callan held numerous United States and Foreign decorations for his many years of faithful service. He was a member of many clubs and aviation societies, including the Early Birds, of which he was President in 1932.

Flying Pioneer, Early Bird John L. Callan was indeed an extraordinary aviation pioneer and devoted most of his active life to both civilian and military aviation accomplishments. As an executive officer he rose to the top of Naval Aviation; his many assignments are legend. His name ranks at the top of the annals of early American aviation history.
